OPENSEWER 4

DATE: Thursday, November 11, 1999... around 6:30pm.
LOCATION: La Cave Du Vin in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Click here for the map.
SUBJECT: Well, so much for the Halloween theme, but that's ok... you can still wear your costume. We'll be talking about consumerism, branding, the ways in which we (as Americans) define our identity, and service (as in, whatever happened to...).
READING
MATERIAL:
Go to your local library, pull out the book, and photocopy the pages (this is not-for-profit, so it's legal)! The 'regulars' will receive copies of this material in the mail. If you would like a copy, please email us your address and we'll happily send you one.

Lead Us Into Temptation (The Triumph of American Materialism) by James B. Twitchell. Read Chapter 5, "The Branding of Experience." If you don't want to read the entire chapter, be sure to read pages 159 to 179 (stop at "Brand Extension"), and page 193 (starting at "The Modern Families of Man Are Branded In Late Adolescence") to the end of the chapter.

Optional (and fun):

The McDonaldization of Society by George Ritzer. Read the heading "Controlling Customers" in Chapter 6, starting on page 105. Don't worry, it's only one page!
