O/S 4 : How Do We Define Ourselves?

Branding, community, history, progress, memory... and the loss of these things... excellent fodder for discussion at the latest Opensewer meeting. Is community tied to a sense of place? Should it be? Can it exist without? Is globalization and homogeneity of culture the death knell of society? Or when things are homogenized, will we simply find new expressions of diversity? What are the implications of the global economy? What does this do to local economies? The human race progresses because of small groups of people solving unique problems individually. What happens to this process when our communities become world-wide? As people define themselves through their communities, their religions, the things they buy, the things they accomplish... what happens to the individuals who become disgruntled? What causes a person to kill other people? Is it sometimes because they cannot find a way to fit themselves into society? Shouldn't we strive for a culture that nurtures every different person from birth so that they may become their full, actualized self? Why do we force people to fit within our societal constraints? Would a culture that fully nurtures the individual as a valuable member of the community be a true democracy? Whoa. You get the point.

This was a great meeting. 11-11-99, 6:30pm to 12:30am. Click on the pictures below.
