The proper position for discussion...

SUMMARY - The Gathering and Discussion

OS NYC was attended by eight people, most of whom were new to the group. Attendance was encouraging - the New York group has steadily grown from three to six, to now eight people. Hopefully, as we get the word out, the next gathering will be even more well-attended!

As you can see from the photographs, the topic definitely struck a chord with those who attended, thus providing for a lively discussion (but that's usually the case anyway). An interesting point that has been coming up at meetings recently is the idea of reaching out even further with Opensewer, converting discussion to action. This point is especially relevant with respect to Opensewer 7's topic - who are the people that really need to be discussing "a new method of valuation?" The middle class? The lower-income working class? Who really cares about this topic? What can we actually do about it?

Another point that was raised was the desire to have opposing viewpoints in the reading materials. Typically, one view of the topic at hand is provided through the reading, and dialogue occurs when people have conflicting views at the meetings. This obviously provides the most interesting discussion - what's the point if everyone agrees? However, in addition to opposing dialogue, there is definitely value to setting opposing viewpoints at the outset (through the reading) and encouraging people to think about several sides of the issue before even coming to the meeting. Avoiding the notion of "preaching to the choir" is very important to Opensewer's objectives of truly productive critical discussion.
