ARTIST STATEMENT

By creating digital collages from World War II photographs and writings of my grandfather, I attempt to examine how his observations might be perceived in the visual and social context of the present. The collages combine "snapshots" my grandfather took while stationed in northern Africa and the notes he wrote to my grandmother on the back of each photograph. Incorporating his unedited messages and the coinciding images, the compositions comment on his reactions to new cultures, the war, death and the way in which he described experiences to my grandmother.
